AWS workshop in House of Watt, Amsterdam
Last week we organized an AWS workshop in the brand-new House of Watt, in Amsterdam. While we discussed the real-time location tracking product with our client Nesa Solutions in a very cool meeting room, around us the ‘construction’ was in full swing.
It’s always very special to be the very first of something. When we were looking for a meeting room and learned we were welcome at House of Watt – even before the grand opening – we were honored.
During our 2-day workshop, the House of Watt staff was working hard to put on the finishing touches. The meeting place had to be ready for the grand opening that would take place a few hours after our workshop. Despite their busy schedule, the House of Watt staff made us feel welcome and took very good care of us!
Our workshop was in cooperation with Nesa Solutions, our Dutch-American client. Nesa Solutions built a real-time location tracking product, specified for indoor use. This product (a chip) determines locations not via GPS, but via bluetooth. Together, we looked at the possibilities to optimize its current landscape with AWS components, making it ready for mass usage.
Years ago, Helmer van der Veer, Chief Product Officer of Nesa Solutions, started designing the real-time location tracking product INSIGHT in an attic room in the Netherlands. Now, he is founder and co-owner of an American company and has moved to Florida – where INSIGHT is being developed further. Its target group: hospitals.
INSIGHT monitors movements of objects and people. Also, the product supports – in combination with a series of its own company applications – different company processes and data flows. With the product, the flow of objects (such as hospital beds, X-ray machines and surveillance equipment) and people (such as patients, doctors and nurses) is closely monitored.
Control and optimization
With INSIGHT you can see which routes doctors walk, in which rooms patients are located, and on which location a certain device is at. The product is very innovative and its main benefits are:
- control of compliance with laws and regulations. E.g.: do doctors wash their hands accordingly to the hospital policy?
- optimization of flow processes. Eg.: is the X-ray machine located at the most efficient place, ensuring as many people as possible can be helped?
Per hospital, INSIGHT monitors a few thousand employees, patients and objects. This requires a ‘smart-chip’, which can be processed in hospital straps. Twice per second, the chip sends its location to a ‘digital map’, so you can see exactly where it’s located.
The same signal triggers various actions based on location and environment, such as (automated) sharing of information, starting activities and warning and/or controlling different devices.
Scalable with AWS components
Now [september 2017], INSIGHT runs in bèta at one of the most prestigious child hospitals of the United States. The generic market launch is scheduled for 2018; this requires a massive upscaling of the system in which the software is running.
Just imagine how many location tracking details will be forwarded if 400 hospitals work with the chip – these numbers will go up into the tens of thousands. Per second! Therefore, INSIGHT requires a scalable system landscape.
Design for scalable system landscape
At the workshop in House of Watt, Nesa Solutions presented an impressive demo of INSIGHT and the corresponding AWS design. The demo was the base of valuable discussions and insights, including the scalability/flexibility of the product. This has to be implemented before the new environment can be completely rolled out.
Furthermore, we discussed the security related aspects. It seemed these can be lifted to a higher level via simple quick wins.
New AWS design for INSIGHT
The new AWS design includes the results of the workshop and a couple of AWS managed services. Also, when developing the new design, we will be taking into account a potential exit strategie.
As soon as Nesa Solutions approves our design, we’ll start with the roll out of the landscape. This landscape will be fully optimized, ready for the future and capable of scaling up alongside the organization.
House of Watt
After our workshop, we didn’t leave House of Watt right away: we were invited for the grand opening later that night. And that was a huge success! A perfectly balanced mixture of students, entrepreneurs and locals enjoyed the brand new place and its many refreshments. Being a meeting place for exactly these target groups, the opening night was one for the books.
