Measuring air quality with IoT-devices
Sometimes you just walk into an office and immediately think: I really wish I had put on / took off / brought my thickest sweater. It’s a fact: offices tend to have a temperature that’s either slightly too cold or too hot. Not our office, though!
We really love a comfortable and consistent temperature. For us, 21.6 degrees Celcius is just perfect. This temperature makes us happy and therefore positively influences our efficiency at work. Last year, we designed something that let’s us keep track of our temperature ánd the air quality at our office.
A permanent place at our office
At the AWS Summit 2016, we used IoT-devices. These are now permanently assembled at our new office! They measure (among other things) the temperature, humidity, the wifi signal and the light incidence.
How are our IoT-devices assembled?
The low-cost and low-power IoT-devices are designed and produced internally. These microcontrollers are based on the ESP8266. The ESP8266 is perfectly adapted for its current goal, thanks to its full TCP/IP stack and a number of IO pins.
Wifi sends the collected data to an AWS SNS topic and SQS queue. Here, it is collected, transformed and sent to ElasticSearch via an EC2 instance with Logstash. The data is visualized with Grafana.
