What is an API Gateway?

An API Gateway provides central management of, and access to all APIs that the organization wants to make available to its customers or partners. This is not programming but configuration.

• There are functionalities in the API Gateway that you would otherwise have to implement/program yourself.

Example of using an API Gateway

A company wants to sell through various partners. The partners need real-time information about products, prices, stock, delivery speed, etc. The APIs that provide this information are securely offered via the gateway, so that data is available to end customers on the partner’s website. For the partners this becomes a self-service. The company that makes the API Gateway available is saving time.
