Why are you going to use APIs ?
APIs are used to connect applications, data and devices. But what do you need APIs for? And why do you want to develop a strategy for this?
Easily connect systems thanks to APIs
Linking systems together has been around for a long time. Using APIs makes this much easier – the application that offers APIs has defined how data goes in/out of the application. You only have to connect to this. However, this does not happen in all cases. Speed and cost benefits (one-off and during the use of the application) are an important reason.
Share data with APIs
Data is the new gold, and you want to handle it well. So you ensure that the data is shared in a secure manner. Security speaks for itself, but why would you start sharing data? A good reason may be to start selling your products and services through third parties. Think of web shops that use data from their suppliers. With APIs this is faster, easier and cheaper.
Screen scraping? Time for an API!
By carefully considering who gets what data and in what quantities, you keep control over your applications. If data is retrieved from your website via screen scraping techniques, then it is time for an API. You can then determine exactly who gets which data, that the correct data is shared and that you can intervene in this process if necessary. For example, data from transport companies or web stores/price comparison sites.
APIs for sharing data with third parties
A proactive reason is generating revenue in other segments of the market – opening up data to third parties so that these third parties can use it to sell you products and services. An example of this is concert tickets. The organizer allows third parties to sell their tickets. But also think of including products in the webshop of another company.
Finally, you increase the insight into the use of your data – knowing who has access to your data allows you to make decisions about this. An example is if you see that certain products or services are often viewed, you can take advantage of this.
